Tips & Tricks
  • One of the greatest strengths of this comp is that it doesn't need to build utility. Kog'Maw provides Sunder / Shred and Inferno provides Wound (Anti-heal). This means you can slam more aggressively early game for tempo.
  • For Primal Blessing, take either Phoenix if you get Primal early Stage 3 and can get takedowns. Take Turtle or Tiger otherwise.

  1. Level to 4 if you have upgrades and a good item to place on one of those upgrades.
  2. Level to 5, unless on 3 loss streak.
  3. Level to 6 if on 4+ win streak (scout to see if necessary in high elo) or can stay above 40g.
  4. Level to 6, unless you would go below 30g. If you have to stay level 5 due to low gold (rare), then level to 6 on 3-5.
  5. Level to 7 if you can stay above 30g, otherwise stay level 6.
  6. Level to 7.
  7. Level to 8. Roll for desired comp until stable. "Stable" changes depending on rank, items, augments, composition, and patch. Melee carries and tanks get the biggest spike for 2-stars. Usually stable involves 2-star tank or carry and some other supporting 2-stars. Try not to roll below 10g.
  8. If you are weak (e.g., have no 2-star 4-costs), consider rolling again to 10g here. If you are stable, save gold to go 9.
  9. If you are low HP and haven't 2-starred your carry and tank, roll to 0g. If you have medium to high HP with an upgraded + itemized 4-cost unit and some other upgrades, save gold to go 9.
  10. If high HP, consider waiting until 5-5 to go level 9. If medium HP, consider going level 9 if you can roll 20g or wait until 5-5. If low HP and can afford to go 9, do so even if you have almost no gold to roll on 9. If you can't afford to go 9 this game, roll every turn for upgrades.
  11. Level to 9 if possible. From this point onward, look to level to 9. Acknowledge games where level 9 is not possible and roll every turn on 8 to preserve placements.
  12. For max cap games, you can either roll on 9 or level to 10. If you are itemizing a 5-cost carry and it is 1-starred, roll on 9. If you have all your main itemized units upgraded, level to 10.

Here’s the thing about this site, “A tier” is so trash when you actually look at what populates it, because they cram everything into a few tiers. This comp is “bad” but this site refuses to put stuff in lower tiers. Like this is “rengar reroll level” thats not “A tier” thats “bad” lol

The tier criticism is valid and one I take seriously, although I think you missed the mark a bit on what comp you left it on lol. This is the most played comp in every elo and most played comp in every competition. I guess it’s “bad” if you are judging it by how often it wins the game. But no one expected this comp to win outside of Bronze for Life (which got nerfed this patch) and other broken setups.

But moving back to the heart of your complaint about tiers: Yes, tiers on this site have some issues. Let me break down my general framework for tiers:

OP = 3.3 average or better USUALLY, or worse average with high play rate and extremely high community sentiment on how broken the condition is.

S+ = 3.6 average or better USUALLY, or worse average with high play rate. Usually the things that people are excited to get, but not snap picking like OP conditions.

S = I don’t look at averages for this tier. Sentiment is generally that no one wants to play a line below this point. If you are a high level player, you aim to always have a line that is at least S tier or better. You will not see a comp baseline be in S-tier or higher unless the meta is very poorly balanced by Riot.

A = Averages are only a small factor for this tier. Generally what’s important here is how popular the comp is (pick rate), how consistent the comp is, and how good the comp feels in the meta. For example, this comp is A-tier because it is the most consistent comp in the meta. Can play it from any spot and go for top 4 usually. Kha’Zix is A-tier because even though it’s a better performing comp, it’s more conditional than this comp. Note that ANY good condition with an A-tier line brings it up to S-tier, which again is the minimum baseline any “good” player is aiming for.

B = Averages are only a small factor for this tier. B-tier covers the widest range of comps on the website. B-tier covers the widest range because it accepts a wider range for comp consistency and comp strength. Sometimes a B-tier comp is really strong with the right conditions, but can’t be played reliably without those conditions. Sometimes a B-tier comp is highly consistent, but weaker than most A-tier comps. The general feeling of B-tier comps is “I will play it instead of A-tier comps only if I can’t play an A-tier comp OR if I have a good spot for it”. Because A-tier comps are usually contested more, sometimes you really can’t play them and have to settle for B-tier.

C = Averages are a bigger factor for this tier. Most comps in C-tier are not playable without conditions. Remember the goal is to play a line that is S-tier or better usually. It’s hard to get a C-tier line to that baseline. So C-tier comps are already getting dangerously close to unplayable. Usually 4.7 to 4.9 range, sometimes even worse.

D = Comps that are unplayable without broken conditions. Usually 5.0+ average without conditions. Usually comps that were viable earlier in the set, but faded out of the meta due to new discoveries or balance changes. Sometimes meme comps that people like playing even though they know it sucks.

It’s rare I put the base tier of any comp outside of “A”, “B”, or “C”. S or higher is almost never because it’s very rare for a comp to reach S-tier strength without any good conditions (which is what baseline S-tier ranking is saying). It requires really bad balance from Riot. D-tier is used sparingly when I think a comp should just not be played, even with conditions most of the time.

EDIT: Also, the issues with “tiers” is why I introduced the second ranking system for comps “Default”, “Meta”, and “Other”. Default comps are consistent and most popular comps. Meta comps are ones you should know about, but more situational. Other are comps that are usually highly situational, but can still be playable. I still do not display those labels on this page, but I need to at some point.

bfl2 is super good, but can be beaten by comps w/o their s+ conditions.

almost lost to a 6 jugg 1.75k stack maokai (at time of game end) with nothing special on their side. keep that in mind. comp gets very strong on 8 and 9 doesnt give you much without kennen 2. had to go for 3* bb to win.

Take Carve a Path out of this comp. It’s completely trash taking into acc that this set only have heavy ad hitters in late game, so you will get the 2 swords in stage 5, when u already lost. It made me lose 8th place.

    1. Anonymous

what? you can play this with an ad opener if anything you should play this with an ad opener so you can slam rageblade/red buff with ie. getting 3 bfs is crazy value

  9. Anonymous

deadlier blades only good on this comp if you either have a v strong start or a bf sword, dont take it raw
