Tips & Tricks
- Best in slot Zac is typically Jeweled Gauntlet + Striker’s Flail + either Edge of Night or Bloodthirster. Can also use Zhonya’s or Wit’s End in place of the EoN / BT.
- You do not need to go for Kayle 3. It’s an option if you take the silver augment and have items for it, but otherwise itemizing Malzahar and pushing levels is completely reasonable after hitting Zac. Don’t roll for Kayle at all with Protagonist — just push levels.

Economy Strategy
- Do not spend gold on leveling this stage. If you have 2-stars and a good item, you can consider playing to win some rounds. Otherwise lose streak is common for stage 2.
- Roll to 33 gold, buying any unit that will be part of the level 4 or 5 board. You can also buy units that will be part of the level 6+ board, but you can sell those if your bench fills and you need to buy other units. Rolling to 33 gold is advisable because it allows you to save back up to 50g by 3-5.
- Do not level if you haven’t hit your 3-star 1-costs yet. If you have your 3-stars, you generally should still stay level 5 if you can win or if leveling to 6 would put you below 20g. Try to get above 40g this round.
- Ideally above 50g, level 5 at this point or level 6 with 3-stars.
- If you haven’t hit your 3-stars yet, roll to ~52g each turn. You don’t want to roll to perfect 50g as any units you buy in shop will put you below 50g. If you have 8+ copies of an itemized 1-cost, you can roll to 40g or 30g every round instead. Level to 6 once you hit your 3-stars.
- If you haven’t hit your 3-stars yet, you must roll until you hit them. You should level to 6 after hitting. In some rare games, you will miss or spend so much gold you can never catch up. These games will usually result in bottom 4 placements.
- Level to 7 if you can stay above ~20g. Otherwise stay level 6.
- Level to 7.
- Level to 8 if you are in bottom half of lobby HP and are losing rounds. If you are higher HP and feel stable, you can wait until next turn.
- Level to 8 if you haven’t already. Roll for any remaining units necessary for the comp. If stable, you can try to go 9. Most games you will end on level 8.
- Level to 9 whenever possible. This is rare, but can happen in the games you have a chance of winning.
I’ve been successfully ragebaited to at least comment. This augment is dominating pro play. Pros are clicking it with ZERO copies, which you are never supposed to do with hero augments, JUST because it’s so broken. If you are sitting there with 1 item Zac in Stage 3 because you won’t slam any item except BiS, then yes — you will go 8th (and maybe not since the line is that broken). For any normal person that is reading these comments and sees the plethora of people saying the line sucks, please remember that people are far more likely to comment after having a bad experience.
Also, this is by FAR the easiest comp in the game to verify how absurdly broken it is. Just look up Zac 3 items and take a look at the stats on any of the items you would slam on the hero augment like Bloodthirster / Jeweled Gauntlet / etc. This is one of the most broken augments ever in TFT’s history, along with a few other hero augments this patch. It’s extremely difficult to read some of these comments because they might actually mislead someone into thinking this line is bad. Use your head, verify for yourself (literally watch ANY pro play, scrims, use any data website, use TFT Academy, use Robin’s handbook like the guy below says, use LITERALLY anything and you’ll see EVERYTHING shows how broken this augment is).
Okay, got it out of my system — You guys can keep ragebaiting now and saying how bad the comp is.
As I said this comp is T R A S H ! Get Protogonist Zac 4 star BIS Poppy Ksante 2 star BIS (Pandora İtems) (Water Lotus II) Malzahar Utility AND Still got 7th …Where am I making mistakes?
Did you press the reroll button with Protagonist, trying to go for Kayle? You’re not meant to. You just push levels with Protagonist. Did you greed items instead of slamming in Stage 3? You need 2 full items minimum on Zac in Stage 3. With Pandora’s there is literally no reason you shouldn’t have 3 items on him as you can slam Malzahar items on Zac if you need to for tempo and then greed for Zac BiS later. Did you have a lobby that was egregiously high roll? I have no idea how many mistakes you did or didn’t make. All I know is your read on the comp is entirely wrong and result-oriented. You can do with that information as you will — It is completely fine if you aren’t comfortable on a line and choose to avoid it because you don’t know how to make it work. High level players do that. But the comp is objectively good. It is one of the few comps in the game that we know with 100% certainty is broken.
EDIT: I also just realized you said you had BiS on K’Sante. I hope that doesn’t mean you were sitting with 3+ components on bench trying to get “ideal” tank items. I have no idea what the context of your game is, but your message implies you probably had 3+ components on bench for more than 1 round. You will lose rounds if you do this.
I didn’t roll for Kayle. She came in with tempo and 3-starred in stage 3 at the same time as Zac. I never kept any items in reserve. When I made items for Ksante, I already had items for Kayle, Zac, Poppy, Malzahar, and Varus. I last made items for Ksante. There was a Crab section, and it gave me a lot of items instead of gold… Despite all this, the team was dying instantly without any resistance.
Are you saying you natural’d Kayle 3 completely at the same pace as Zac from Protagonist which gives you a Zac every round? You never rolled before level 8 even once? Or did you roll to try and hit Zac 3 sooner? If you did, that will throw your game entirely. If you natural’d Kayle 3, your spot was completely absurd and a top 1% variance high roll. I’d have to see the game, but my guess — and please do not take this the wrong way — is that you don’t have the skill level to understand what actually went wrong in your game. Was there several Exodia players in your lobby? Exodia meaning 7 Crystal Gambit, or disgusting artifact combo, people who hit every 4 cost in Stage 4, etc. These people do absurd amounts of damage to you every time you fight, so even if you are playing a comp that on average performs well, you can just get matchmaking into a 7th. There is far too many variables to accurately discern your specific issue, but trust me the comp is good. Most people would pay to have Zac offered to them every game.
P.S: I am fairly done with this discussion now — I’ve given you a decent amount of insight, you can use it as you want. If you want to avoid it because of your one bad game with it, there’s no issue with that.
please just use robinsongs tfthandbook. most of the time these comps are all info grabbed from tactics.gg and not even viable good comps to play.
I’m sorry but tfthandbook is inferior to this site and the other site Frodan and Dishsoap host. Suggesting otherwise is ludicrous and diminishes your credibility.
This Comp Trash than trash…. 3star kayle + 3 star zac current items on ksante and other. Still TRASH. Not even in 4th…. S+ tier haha good joke
my zac have no time to make dmg…. just died like shit, top7, with best gear… something’s wrong, there is some condition that are not explain or just a mistake in the ranking.
If you get fusion dance on Zac, who are you picking as the partner? I tried rolling with Darius since he has more HP than Kobuko. And then I put two deathcaps + warmogs. Idk. Comp feels bad when Zac doesn’t oneshot their backline especially because the rest of your frontline is squishy.
is it radiant jg or radiant stiker’s because stats says stiker’s
I think you forgot to put Radiant JG as a +1 tier condition, as you have Radiant Refactor already as a +1 condition.
In my opinion this comp is quite bad unless I’m playing it wrong? I chose it twice in one day, hit BIS on Zac and 6 wraith and still ended bottom 4 both times. Zac just doesn’t seem to live long enough. If you really think it’s an S+/OP comp could you maybe make a more in depth guide on this comp? in the tips and tricks section. That would be helpful. I’m high Emerald atm if that matters.
Just hit protogonist , pandora items and BIS snax. I have fully items on full comp without Varus and without Varus comp is simply trash. Get 6th place (poppy + ksante 2 star and itemized. Comp is destroyed in seconds…
This is really good if your zac doesnt decide to only target frontline
Find your center is S tier augment for zac. 1000 pushups is also viable as a fruit.
Max Vitality is so bad, the value Colossal gives immedietly compared to stacking Max Vitality is 10x, Not Done Yet is a better power up imo, since your zac is most likely gonna die early anyways, more potenital than Max Vitality by a mile
this comp sucks. Don’t be misguided.
skill issue buddy
Skill? What do you mean skill in TFT ? This game based on luck ya know?
Really strong but Yuumi hard counters this, got 4th with BIS and insane opener in a lobby with 2 yuumi players
I’ve played this line from protagonist a few times, just wanted to add that I think Max Vitality is very outclassed – since so much of your power is within Zac himself playing it with Fusion Dance (with warmogs especially) seems to be the strongest. Colossal would be 2nd to that.
In a recent video you said Zac Protagonist is only bad hero with Rageblade at 2-1. Im in love with it. It might not be optimal, but attack speed from rageblade makes Zac have so much mana regen that every bounce is Active and deals bonus damage.
Protagonist with Fusion Dance + Belt Overflow seemed a little ridiculous when I got that. AA still seemed a little underwhelming not getting many stacks before fight end.
do we not run archangels?
Zac dies too fast. Archangels won’t do anything.
I don’t know if it’s justified, but you can roll for Zac with the Protagonist augment above 9 copies if the round has started and you haven’t hit 3-star yet. If I’m still level 4, I do this when I see that he should be completed this round. I wait for the round to start, buy 9th Zac, and keep rolling so that he hits 4-star much earlier. Of course, you can do the same with other Protagonist units as well.
This is something called “over rolling” back to the days when people play the taliya sett reroll comp and want more copies of taliya. I’m not sure if it’s worthy for Protagonist/Worth the wait cause usually you already hit three star before 3-1.
I tried Zac with JG, Gunblade and Guinsoo and it was incredibly strong
nashor looks fine too
Innervating locket is great on Zac!
Loving the updated website btw, keep it up!
