Tips & Tricks
  • This comp takes advantage of the nearly perfect crossover between Ionia and Freljord, then fills out with high quality units
  • The comp unlocks Ryze for free on Level 9
  • The flex slots for the main board are Taric and Ryze. The main flex unit options are Kindred, Taric, Ryze, Skarner, Lucian, and any other 5-costs with utility. Typically will play Ryze, Taric, or Kindred.
  • Use Lissandra as your AP item holder for Ryze late game
  • Can play Volibear over Taric after unlocking Ryze if you have items for him. It’s not as trait efficient and it causes Ryze to lose a trait, but it is worth doing if you have items for Volibear 2.

Economy Strategy
  1. Level to 4 if you have upgrades and a good item to place on one of those upgrades.
  2. Level to 5, unless on 3 loss streak.
  3. Level to 6 if on 4+ win streak (scout to see if necessary in high elo) or can stay above 40g.
  4. Level to 6, unless you would go below 30g. If you have to stay level 5 due to low gold (rare), then level to 6 on 3-5.
  5. Level to 7 if you can stay above 30g, otherwise stay level 6.
  6. Level to 7.
  7. Level to 8. Roll for desired comp until stable. “Stable” changes depending on rank, items, augments, composition, and patch. Melee carries and tanks get the biggest spike for 2-stars. Usually stable involves 2-star tank or carry and some other supporting 2-stars. Try not to roll below 10g.
  8. If you are weak (e.g., have no 2-star 4-costs), consider rolling again to 10g here. If you are stable, save gold to go 9.
  9. If you are low HP and haven’t 2-starred your carry and tank, roll to 0g. If you have medium to high HP with an upgraded + itemized 4-cost unit and some other upgrades, save gold to go 9.
  10. If high HP, consider waiting until 5-5 to go level 9. If medium HP, consider going level 9 if you can roll 20g or wait until 5-5. If low HP and can afford to go 9, do so even if you have almost no gold to roll on 9. If you can’t afford to go 9 this game, roll every turn for upgrades.
  11. Level to 9 if possible. From this point onward, look to level to 9. Acknowledge games where level 9 is not possible and roll every turn on 8 to preserve placements.
  12. For max cap games, you can either roll on 9 or level to 10. If you are itemizing a 5-cost carry and it is 1-starred, roll on 9. If you have all your main itemized units upgraded, level to 10.

When you unlock Ryze,. Is it better to transfer the ap items from Liss 2 to Ryze 1?

    1. Anonymous

      most likely not

    2. Verdant Leaf

Ryze is good here because he applies Chill for Lissandra; I’d only move items if it were Ryze 2, and even then it’s somewhat debatable.

  2. Elias

Can someone please explain the advantage of not having all of the yunara, lissandra and ryze under freljord’s tower?

    1. mato

aoe dmg would hit them all, need to space out backline

  3. DCD

A good top 4 board but by endgame you are playing ryze +1 5cost, while other capped boards are playing 4-5 5costs. So you can’t really compete with that.

  4. Eujiboo

So.. I tried this build and I got a 20 win-streak, stayed at 100HP and I don’t even know what just happened.

  5. Kero

even with perfect items including Darkin Bow Yunara still always feels awful for me. i dont get what I’m missing. I lose to arguably mediocre boards even with a second carry itemized.

(also unrelated, I really appreciate your UI and UX choices on this site 🙂 )

  6. inFinem

I’ve been having a ton of fun playing this comp, thanks for all the details and explanations on how to make it work!

Are there other strong boards to unlock Kobuko if you don’t have a good Yordle start? In these games, I’ve just been playing the non-Ryze version

  7. unimentil

I had the opportunity twice today to plug in shurima on my level 9 board. If you end up doing the same and unlock nasus you can make him the main tank by dropping taric and wukong (keep wukong on bench for 10). If you unlock renekton it’s a lot harder because you either drop wukong and taric to main tank sejuani, or you drop wukong and kobuko to main tank taric. Personally, dropping yordle feels bad because losing the yordle damage reduction makes it easier for teams to break through your frontline and the targon bonus for ryze doesn’t make up for it. At level 10 you can main tank wukong again (unless you have nasus) and if youre able to get items on all of your main carries (avoid getting items for azir), then you should be in a very good spot to win the game.

In this shurima variation if you randomly get a spat, making ionia or freljord +1 is a good option because then you don’t have to drop taric on 9. The same applies for getting any tactician’s item (+1 team size items). Ionia spat would go on azir/renekton and freljord spat would go on taric. If you get ionia spat, you can drop wukong for volibear and replace ashe with kindred. If you get freljord spat, you again drop ashe for kindred. Playing for shurima is very greedy, but the combat power you get from the ryze knockups as well as farming gold+components can make your board cap higher.

I tried checking stats, but it’s very hard to compare the shurima variation (<400 games) to the normal variation (~100,000 games) because of the difference in sample sizes.

rereading my comment, if you end up unlocking renekton and already have upgraded frontliners it’s probably better to wait until level 10 to play shurima. Just wanted to make that clear for myself and anyone else reading this after thinking about the board more throughout the day.

Live patch, Yunara feels really bad :/ perfect items for her and had her since first augment, never dealt over 8k with path of blades.

    1. Mustang

I think the only viable way to win with her if she has the darkin augment ughh sucks

      1. Anonymous

had bis on both yunara and lissandra with sunder and shred + tank items on wukong and taric, everyone upgraded. went 4th. frontline scaled long enough for yunara but she just doenst do damage

    2. WCKD

yep, just beat a Yunara 3-star with Bronze for Life Bilgewater flex.

  9. Evelynna

Out of all the comps, I find this one 2nd hardest to make. Ryze is very difficult to make. I unblock him, but exactly before being able to field him, I die.

    1. Flexer

Consider Ryze a “bonus” and not the win condition. Your board needs to all be 2-star to be stable before you go to 9.

  10. Anonymous

    really good comp

  11. Slytari

Used this to cap my board on PBE and went first (2nd place was 7 Ionia). Works even better if you can maintain a winstreak with the gold generating Ionia path.
    Cheers!
